Creative Sketches With Shel- A Lesson in CASE vs COPY...

 I was asked a question this week and I realized that those of us who have been stamping for a while forget that we use terms that new stampers may not understand.  

The question I received was if I could explain what case-ing was.  

The idea behind case-ing is to change up a card and make it your own.  

Sometimes I only see a part of a card I like.  

Sometimes I love the whole card and wish I could just copy it.  The sketch I used tonight was from CASE-ING Tuesday: 

They chose this box on page 20 of the J2A Mini: 

If I were to COPY this box and make a card it would look like this: 

But if I were to CASE this box, it could look like this: 

In this instance I changed the cardstock color, I changed the DSP, I used different products, I added a banner and changed the placement of the greeting and the ribbon.  

The idea came from the box, it follows the sketch, but is totally different.  I made it my own. 

Here is another example of case-ing: 

For this card, I flipped the sketch and made my card in landscape format.  

I changed the mat layer for a tag and added a circle for my focal image. I also added an additional mat layer to make the DSP pop.

I encourage you to look at your catalogs and see a layout you like.  

I challenge you to make a card by Case-ing and making it your own!

Simply swipe an Azure Afternoon Classic Stampin’ Pad against Azure Afternoon Cardstock to achieve tone-on-tone depth and texture. (Use our new Stampin’ Brayer if you’d really like to lay on the color!) Stamp the adorable “Land, ho!” image in Azure Afternoon ink on the Perennial Postage die cut (made from Basic White Cardstock). Finish with a sentiment stamped in Tuxedo Black Memento ink on Old Olive Cardstock. AVID To make the shipshape avid card, die cut postage stamp shapes from Azure Afternoon and Tahitian Tide Cardstock; emboss both shapes using the Cascading Ruffles Embossing Folder, then layer them behind the focal point to create a “wavy” background. Stamp the image in Memento ink, color with your choice of Stampin’ Blends, die cut, then adhere the colored image to the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals. ARTFULLY AVID Die cut the image from the Just Kiddin’ Designer Series Paper—the coloring is done for you! Add a Perennial Postage layer die cut from Just Kiddin’ Designer Series Paper. Tear strips of Tahitian Tide Cardstock (distressed with Tahitian Tide ink) and layer them with the other card elements.

Monochrome Monday...Guest Stamper Carole Anderson...

 

Good Monday morning all my creative friends!  

Today is Monochrome Monday and confession time.  

First up, the confession:  I totally FORGOT about Monochrome Monday!  Yikes!  I can't believe it myself!  I honestly do not know what happened.  I guess my brain decided to take a vacation this weekend!  

Saturday was a slow start as I had a bitchin' headache and was a busier day than usual for me as I had a lot of errands and also had to find a birthday gift and get a cake for my daughter-in-law. 

My toaster also decided to crap out on me on Saturday and I was so sad.  My Bravetti toaster was THE BEST.  

I went online in search of another one and was shocked at the prices.  $249 for a replacement two-slicer! I loved that toaster... it was my saving grace years ago after purchasing three garbage cheap toasters.  

But could not justify the cost so we did some research and read reviews and settled on a Cuisinart.  I wanted only a two-slicker as my house is tiny and I have zero storage space...a two-slicker fits nicely on the shelves by my sink. 

So Sunday morning after coffee we were off to find the great review Cuisinart model.  

Found it at Costco but only in the four-slicer model... I really only wanted a two-slicer due to storage issues, but could not beat the price so I gave in and took the four-slicer. 

The crowds at Costco were INSANE!  But $69.99 and standing in line for half an hour we finally had a replacement toaster.  

Read the manual and did a test toast and it seems to be as good as the reviews.  Fingers crossed it lasts. 

 It was Lianne's birthday sowe went over on Sunday afternoon with a birthday cake and a gift for her, and had a visit. 

Sunday night I was working on cards for this week's blog post and I really do not know why I forgot about Monochrome Monday....brain on vacation is my only excuse.  

When I realized it this morning, after beating myself up about my stupidity, I could only think....thank God for Carole...she sent me her Monochrome Monday card... so my hero today is Carole!  She saves Monochrome Monday!  Here is her card: 

 

What I love: 

• the gorgeous embossed panel featuring the FERN 3D EMBOSSING FOLDER found on page 168 of the annual catalog.
• the Deckled Circle die-cut shape for her greeting that was popped up with Dimensionals
• the gorgeous fern that coordinates so beautifully with the embossed layer- this is from NATURE'S PRINTS BUNDLE found on page 24 of the annual catalog.

Creative Challenge: Embossing Paste with Six Card Samples and Two Scrapbook Page Samples....

Creative Challenge

If you’re looking for a fun creative challenge, look no further—here is one for you! This creative challenge involves creating cute designs using Shimmery White finish Embossing Paste. How this card was made:  1. Apply a thin layer of Embossing Paste to a panel of Coastal Cabana Cardstock with a Palette Knife. 2.  Use the stylus attachment on the Take Your Pick™ tool to create a pattern before the paste dried.  And that’s it! Try this challenge and show me what you can come up with!  Here are some samples of cards and scrapbook pages that I have made in the past.  Hopefully, they will give you some inspiration:  The clouds were made by applying embossing paste through a mask/stencil.  This scrapbook page was a labor of love....it took FOREVER.  I tore and distressed a complete sheet of cardstock and then glued it on a different color sheet of cardstock . I added embossing paste, ribbons, ink spritzing, die cut elements and made 3d flowers.  I love the end result.   This card has shimmery embossing paste with added glitter added to card with mask/stencil I added ink to embossing paste to create the dirt for my cards Another card with glittered embossing paste through a stencil/mask.  A simple silly scrapbook page with stars added using embossing paste and a mask/stencil then spritzed with blue ink/alcohol combo.

Stamp With Shel- Monochrome Monday Challenge...two cards ant two tutorials!

Today's Monochrome Monday Challenge is Sweet Sorbet! 

Here are our cards: 

First up is this gorgeous card made by Carole: 

What I love:  

1.  She used the sketch and tutorial I taught in last Tuesday's Creative Sketches With Shel.  

I love it when I know that I am giving you content that is of value to you 😍

2.  The mixed shapes of her tags

3.  The peekaboo ribbon adds just a tich of sparkle that coordinates beautifully with the rhinestones.

I used the Sending Smiles bundle from the annual catalog and made a Peekaboo Corner Fold card. 

How You Can Make It: 

Supplies: 

Sending Smiles Bundle

Sweet Sorbet card stock

Basic White card stock

Sweet Sorbet DSP

Sweet Sorbet ink pad

Measurements: 

Card Base: Sweet Sorbet: 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 scored at 4 1/4

Card Liner: Basic White: 4 x 5 1/4

Front Mat: Basic White: 4 x 5 1/4

DSP: (In Color DSP): 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 

DSP: for triangle: 1 5/8 x 3 5/8

Stamped Flowers and tag: Basic White: 4 x 5 1/2

Tag Mat: Sweet Sorbet: scrap

Tag Mat: Basic White: 4x 1 1/2

Instructions: 

1.  Fold the card base on the score line and burnish it flat. 

2.  Add a basic white liner to the inside panel of the card. 

3. On the front of the card measure down from the top 2 inches and put a tick mark. 

4. Score from the center fold to the tick mark.

5.  Now take the Basic White mat layer over the card front with a smaller border on the top edge (1/8")

6.  On the white layer mark a little above the tick mark on the card base on the right side and mark a little bit in from the score line on the left side. Now line up the tick marks in the track of your paper trimmer and cut off the triangle. 

7.  Repeat the same process as above using the white cardstock and the DSP. 

8.  Take the small rectangle of DSP and cut it in half diagonally from the top right to the bottom left. 

9.  Now you have all your pieces to assemble the front of your card. ...glue them together

10.  Glue the flap to the front of the card. 

11.  Stamp and die cut flowers and greetings. 

12.  Add greetings to the panel and then attach them to the card front. 

12.  Add a flower to the inside panel of the card for a bit of interest.
