No More Inky Fingers

Sponge Handles

Here is both a money saving and a finger saving tip for you.....

Take your sponges ( item#101610 $4.25 page 179) and cut them into six pieces as shown below:

Then take your tab punch and punch out cardstock in the same color as the ink you are going to dedicate the sponge to ( or simply use white cardstock and write the name on the tab) 

Then you will have a sponge dedicated to each color, that is easy to find.  

This will save you money as you will no longer be throwing out ruined sponges, or have multiple sponges for the same colored inks. And of course, the organization factor is a BIG plus for me....

Twelve Weeks of Christmas- Week One

I know it is only the first week of October, but believe it or not, there are only 82 days till Christmas!

Yes, girls it is time to start planning, and making your cards and shopping for gifts to beat the rush.

Here is my submission for the first of the Twelve Weeks of Christmas:

From the outside it looks like a cute snowman card with a belly band.....but on the inside:

It is a gift card holder!

To make:

Crumb Cake cardstock 8.5" x 5.5" scored at 2.5" and5.5"
Using versamark ink and images from Snow Much Fun stamp set decorate the flap with the bird on the snowball, and the front with the tree image.
With Cherry Cobbler Ink and Curly Cute stamp set stamp the greeting
Using the ribbon punch and Cherry Cobbler cardstock punch a strip 5.5" long and attach to inside of front flap
With Cherry Cobbler cardstock 7" x 1" make a belly band. It needs to keep the card closed but still be able to slide off smoothly.
With Very Vanilla stamp the snowman image on the front and color - then punch out with the1.5" circle punch
Withe Cherry Cobbler cardstock and the scalloped circle punch, punch out one and then paper pierce holes in each scallop
Assemble your card!  A glue dot or bit of tap runner will hold your gift card in place.

Embossing Folder Problems

I have been hearing from some of my girls, that they have been having issues with their embossing folders.

I believe it is because no Big Shot is calibrated the same....some are tighter, some are looser.  I have two Big Shots and they are different as day and night. I personally have not ran into issues with tearing or bending, but I know that lots of other people have.

First off,  I ALWAYS recommend that you run the open end of the folder through the Big Shot First- it puts less stress on the fold, and hence less stress on the cardstock.

So, that being said, I have come up with two solutions for you.

I believe that the problems occur mainly with the Whisper White and the Very Vanilla cardstock.  This is due to the fact that these cardstocks are thinner than the rest.

The first solution, I have heard about, but not tried myself, is to lightly spritz your cardstock with water prior to running it through the folder.  The downfall with this one is you have to let it dry a few minutes/

The second solution is to take a piece of vellum and permanently attach it to the inside of the embossing folder that is giving you grief.  I have not tried, but have seen a video from another demonstrator.  This works!

Christmas Classes!

Each year, as Christmas approaches, I offer two options for Christmas cards. 

Option 1:  Card classes in September, October, and November where we make ten cards each class.  Attend one class or attend them all.

Option 2:  Saturday Stamp Camp in November, where we make 30 cards and lunch is provided.

Free Crop!

As a special thank you to those who attend any of my monthly card classes or scrapbooking classes, I host a Saturday Free Crop, once a month, from 10 am to 4 pm. 

 You bring all your own supplies and projects to work on while socializing.  No teaching is involved and no supplies or tools are provided- this is simply a fun social day with the girls.

We have a potluck lunch and everyone brings something to contribute.  Tea, coffee and water are available all day.

Workshops are still your best opportunity!

At the heart of Stampin’ Up! is our workshop experience.  If you have ever attended or hosted a workshop, you know it is different from other parties. 

#1 it is FUN!  Being with your family and friends for a night of laughs, muchies and cool ideas is always a good time!

Sketch Challenge! 

This Month's Tutorial- Faux Diamonds! 

Supplies Needed:

. Versa Mark ink
. Card Stock
. Stamping sponges
. Irridescent Ice embossing powder
. Heat Tool
. Optional: Powder Pal, Embossing Buddy

1. Begin by applying VersaMark® ink on card stock. We used the direct-to-paper technique for this Happy Birthday card, although you can also use stamping sponges to apply the ink (see Figure 1).

 

2. Sprinkle Iridescent Ice embossing powder all over the card stock (see Figure 2), shake the excess powder off (see Figure 3), and heat set (see Figure 4). Be careful not to overheat.

  
 
3. You're left with a glistening piece of card stock that you can use as background paper or a layer under your focal point. If you're going to adhere anything to card stock accented with this faux-diamond look, you'll need to use a strong adhesive; we suggest Sticky Strip or Glue Dots. This ensures that whatever accent you are using stays in place.

Idea to note: You can use this same faux-diamond technique to add a splash of sparkle to stamped images as well. For our birthday cake, we used the VersaMarker® on specific areas, then sprinkled the iridescent powder on those areas, shook the excess powder off, and heat set. This look dresses up any card, gift, or project.

SKETCHES FOR WEEK OF SEPT 30, 2012

Hi girls!

Here is your weekly sketch challenge.  This week, one sketch to make a card and a scrapbook page.

Feeling Creative?

This card was made in September's Card Making Class. 

It features the stamp set Creative Elements (page 126AC #122647  $30.95) 

We stamped the images with Versamark Ink (page 159AC  #102283  $9.95) and heat embossed with Early Espresso embossing powder (page 32HC #128980 $5.95) 

Then we cut faux frames using spellbinder dies. 

Finally a piece of retired Chocolate Chip satin ribbon was formed into an inline bow and attached with sticky strip.

Anniversary / Love Card....

This is another card we made in September's Card Making Class. 

It would make an awesome anniversary card!  

The greeting is from the Loving Thoughts stamp set (page 136 AC  #125845  $28.95.

The card base is basic black and the mat is real red.  The whisper white top layer is punched with the full heart punch (page 182AC #119883  $22.95)  

A piece of designer series paper is placed behind the top layer to color the hearts.  I chose Polka Dot Parade (page 164 AC  #126902  $13.500 

A tiny heart was free cut and applied to the top right corner. 

A black journal-ling pen was used to draw little lines around the hearts to add interest.  

Finally a bow was made with Rose Red seam binding ribbon (page 172  #121884  $9.50)  that was colored with real red ink to match.

The Open Sea....

Here is a great "guy" card that we made in September Card Making Class. 

 It features the stamp set The Open Sea (page 104 AC- #123032  $22.95)  which was heat embossed with the new Early Espresso embossing powder (page 32 HC  #128980 $5.95)

The greeting is from the stamp set Teeny Tiny Wishes ( page 133 AC  #127802  $32.95)

The bottle was a hand drawn sketch that we cut out of cardstock.  It was "aged" with soft sued ink

. 

The map is actually a road map of  Manitoba that was crumpled up, edges torn,  and then sponged with soft suede ink. 

The compass was made with three circle punches, assembled then tied with bakers twine to the bottle.  

The mat is early espresso and the base is crumb cake.  

The greeting was punched with the modern label punch (page 183 AC #119849 $22.95) and adhered with brads.

Playing with Re-inkers.....

The other day, I was making a card, and needed ribbon, but did not have the correct color. 

So, I figured it was worth a shot to try to make my own. 

I grabbed some retired grosgrain ribbon…..then took some re-inker and water and mixed it together and painted it on the ribbon with a stiff paint brush.

A little help from my heat gun sped up the drying time, and voila!  I have Night of Navy ribbon!

How cool is that!
